Hello everyone. I hope your week has been going well.
I know, the title is a little odd this week but eventually, when you are working with the functional medicine community to improve your health you will have a discussion about your poop. It is a sign of your health, particularly gut health. (Gut Health is another blog that I will eventually get to but if you haven’t read my blog on Leaky Gut, you might want to check that out. You can find it here:http://www.yourhealthmadesimple.com/single-post/2017/03/30/Leaky-Gut-what-is-it-is-it-bad-for-me
And, I did say that the client that inspired my last blog was going to inspire more. And she has graciously given me more to share with you. Haha. You know who you are, and thank you.
Client – I need you to talk with J (her husband) about how many times he poops in a day.
Me – Ok (laughing). Sooner or later we are going to have that discussion so let’s get on with it. So J, how many times are you going and describe it to me.
J – Three times a day, and I’m a number 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart. (Now we are both laughing like children discussing something forbidden.)
Me – J that is awesome. At least you aren’t a Number 6 or 7. (More laughing)
J – She thinks I’m abnormal
Me – Why? How often does she go?
J – Every 3-4 days. And when she goes, she is a Number 1 on the scale.
Client – (yelling in the background) It’s good because that way I won’t have to go when I’m hiking. (Hence the title of this blog)
We all live in Colorado and hiking and being outdoors is something that we can’t get enough of around here. However, not going for 3-4 days is not recommended no matter how much you would like to justify it. The better recommendation is to fix the reason you aren’t going daily, purchase the tools you need to dig that hole or bring the necessities to bag it up and carry it out with you. We are advanced enough now that I’m pretty sure you can find the necessary equipment at your local REI store or online. Haha. No more excuses from you know who you are.
You might be wondering why a daily elimination is necessary. Well, there are a couple of reasons. Our waste is toxic. Some of us can be carrying 10-20 lbs of waste around with us in our intestines waiting for it to leave our bodies. If you aren’t going daily, it is building up in there, sitting and putrefying and beyond the health implications, you probably are not feeling fabulous. Our intestines have a role to play. If we are all clogged up, our body isn’t going to be able to function properly so we need them to be relatively clean and definitely not backed up.
Ladies, I’m sure you are asking why is it generally easier for guys to go than it is for us girls. Well, they don’t have the hormones raging around inside them the way that we do. They are a contributing factor but, you can still achieve a good bowel movement every day with proper care for your body.
So what constitutes a good poop and what are some of the things that need to be fixed in order to fix the issues that people can have surrounding pooping?
To answer the first question I am going to refer you to the Bristol Poop Chart or Scale at the following link.
The video is entertaining and worth a listen if you are interested in working on a new accent or for a laugh in general. The written information is extremely informative and if you are interested in evaluating where you sit on the Bristol scale, it is worth the read.
If you are not in the normal range of the scale, either 4 or 5, there is some work to do. There are many things that play into gut health but you could start with the following.
Hydration – make sure that you are drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of clean water daily. This is so important. No, you can’t substitute other liquids for water. You need to drink water. Can you spice up your water a little? Sure. If you want to infuse your water by adding lemon, cucumber, mint, basil, etc to your water to give it a little bit more flavor, that’s ok. There are nutrients being provided by these additions. You can find some great ideas for infusing water here. https://www.buzzfeed.com/melissaharrison/fruit-infused-waters?utm_term=.xueDWMVdnD#.og23B8M7O3
Diet – Plays a massive role in your ability to sit on the porcelain bowl every day. You need to be eating a clean, whole foods diet, every day, and every meal. Inflammatory foods must be eliminated to allow your body to process what you have eaten properly. Lastly, you must get 38-42g of fiber every day. Most of this fiber needs to be from leafy green veggies. What does this mean you ask? Well, this means 7-9 servings of veggies and fruit a day. Notice that I said veggies and then fruit. You can’t just eat fruit. For every 3 servings of veggies, you can have 1 serving of fruit. That is the rule.
This is going to go a long way to helping your bodies eliminate however, sometimes, there is much going on in the way of dysfunction in our gut and additional help is required to rectify the current pooping situation. If you are unable to correct your issues with proper hydration and a truly healthy diet then you might need some help to determine what hidden stressors are getting in the way of ideal elimination.
Hidden stressors are my specialty. If you find yourself having some difficulties in this department and want to find out more, I can help. You can find me at www.yourhealthmadesimple.com or you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Hope you have a fabulous day.
